Heritage Run 2013
Work will be starting in the area near the school starting this week.
The first phase of the work will start just west of 15th St. and will go to 18th St. The work will take place in the middle of the street, along the median. Traffic flow will remain open both north and south on Balboa Blvd., though there will be intermittent lane closures. In addition, cross traffic will not be allowed on 16th St. and 17th St. The work hours will be from 7:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. and there will be times that require 24 hour work.
Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or suggestions for our outreach efforts.
New Dismissal Policy
In the interest of the safety of our students we have made some changes to the procedures for afternoon dismissal and pick-up. The map on the reverse side of this notice will help you know the correct place to either pick up your children or where your children will be exiting the school at the end of each day. This procedure will begin this coming Monday, October 21st. Please carefully review the map so that you can be ready for the change on that day. If you have any questions, please let the front office know. Again, your students’ safety is our main concern.
October is the month to begin the process for GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) testing for 3rd – 6th grade students. Teachers are looking at the students’ behaviors and working to determine if they are able to see evidence of gifted characteristics with any of the students in their classroom. For a list of these GATE characteristics, please go the http://web.nmusd.us and then click on departments and scroll to GATE.
ALL 3rd graders are eligible for GATE testing if the parents give permission. For a 4th – 6th grader to qualify for testing, the student must first be recommended by their teacher or their parent. See your child’s teacher about requesting testing. Keep in mind however, that to proceed with testing, the student must meet the following guidelines:
Our Unique History
Newport Elementary School is a special school. We are located directly on Newport Beach. Our students’ play structure is in the sand! We are one of only two schools in the nation that enjoys this unique setting. Our school building also holds a lot of history.
Newport Elementary Named Distinguished School
We are thrilled and honored to be recognized by the state of California as a Distinguished School. We’ve worked hard to implement systematic practices to improve student achievement. The two practices that were highlighted in our application were our response to intervention program and our writing workshops. Newport El has a great, dedicated team that includes a collaborative staff, fantastic student body, and supportive school community. Our journey and focus on continuous improvement will continue!
